ZED for MSMEs: Better Quality, Less Waste, Stronger Manufacturing

ZED for MSMEs: Better Quality, Less Waste, Stronger Manufacturing

MSME TRUST Enterprise Guide: 2 November 2026

A product defect, an unsafe work area or avoidable energy use can quietly increase the cost of running a manufacturing unit. ZED (Zero Defect Zero Effect) encourages MSMEs to improve product quality while reducing the environmental impact of production.

ZED looks at the way a unit works: quality controls, workplace safety, timely delivery, energy management, measurement and waste reduction. Certification has Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. It is voluntary and does not replace other licences or certifications a business may require.

Who should explore ZED?

The programme is designed for Udyam-registered manufacturing MSMEs. A unit can begin by identifying one repeated defect, one safety concern and one source of wasted material or energy. Recording the problem, its cause and the improvement made is a useful step even before seeking certification.

How does a unit begin?

Visit the official ZED portal, use the Udyam registration number and linked mobile number, and follow the ZED Pledge and certification process. The scheme includes assessment and guidance; certification depends on meeting the applicable requirements.

Check current terms before paying. The Ministry’s September 2024 amendment revised listed certification costs to ₹8,000 for Bronze, ₹32,000 for Silver and ₹72,000 for Gold. Some official summary pages still show older figures. A Maharashtra scheme listing also displays 31 March 2026 as its end date. We could not verify a current application cutoff or confirm live intake, so applicants should check fees, subsidy eligibility and availability with the official ZED team first. Certification does not guarantee a buyer or order.

Related programmes to understand

MSME Competitive (Lean) addresses wasted time, inventory, space, materials and energy through process improvement. Its official portal lists Udyam-registered MSMEs and eligible Common Facility Centres under its coverage. Explore Lean.

MSE-CDP supports groups of micro and small enterprises working on shared facilities such as testing or common production centres. It is a cluster-level route, rather than an individual unit’s ZED application. Read the Ministry’s scheme overview.

MSME TRUST’s suggestion: Start with a simple shop-floor improvement record. Then discuss which programme fits your unit or cluster. Send us a general description of your quality or waste challenge; avoid posting confidential business information publicly.
